Learn how First Nation’s people cared for the land and helped it recover and rejuvenate.

Video Workshop 1. Rivers & Artefacts

Richie Allan will discuss the master plan used for the three rivers The Molonglo, Murrumbidgee and Yass River, the channel that runs under Northbourne Avenue. He will also share his knowledge through depicted artwork. Richie will discuss the cultural history of the rivers that connected and once flowed through Lake Burley Griffin. Richie will also discuss artefacts at Gubur Dhaura Ochre Pit (Ngunnawal name for ‘Ochre Ground’) and show how these can be identified in our backyard the suburbs or bushland.

Talent: Richie Allan is a well-known and respected Ngunnawal/Kamilaroi man managing his business, Traditional Owners Aboriginal Corporation (TOAC). He delivers cultural awareness training, culture, and education talks, performs Welcome to Country and smoking ceremonies and cultural tours for the local community and local Government to find new and innovative ways to improve the lives of Indigenous people.

Video Workshop 2. Native Flora & Fauna

Kristi Lee is an Indigenous Ranger for ACT Parks and Conservation, who will take the audience on a journey of discovery through Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. She will take you to a grass tree site and show you local native plants and animals specific to the area.

Talent: Kristi is a descendant of the Githabul people of the Woodenbong and Muli Muli communities of Northern NSW. She has a Bachelor of Science degree and studied ecology and conservation management at the ANU. She works as the Indigenous Ranger at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve (ACT PCS) and has a passion for native wildlife, bush food and medicine plants, and traditional land management practices, such as cultural burning.

Kristi received the ‘Caring for Country’ award at 2019 ACT NAIDOC Awards.

Bush Tucker

Sharing the traditional knowledge of bush tucker and how these recipes can be adapted to modern-day practice

Video Workshop 1. Adam Shipp and Richie Allan’s Buru

Adam and Richie will cook ‘Buru’, a Ngunnawal word for Kangaroo, over hot coals and lemon myrtle damper at the Jerrabomberra Wetlands Culture Garden using local bush herbs. They will show audiences how to cook this delicious dish and discuss how this would have been made traditionally and how it has been adapted to fit into our current way of living. It is harder to employ traditional hunting practices these days however you can buy Kangaroo meat from local supermarkets. They will discuss cooking the Buru dish and how this can be prepared over hot coals, cooked in an air fryer, weber BBQ or skillet pan. They will include local Ngunnawal herbs to enhance the flavour of the dish and discuss where the herbs can be sourced and their medicinal uses.

Talent: Adam Shipp is a well-known and respected Wiradjuri man who manages a business Yurbay, Culture Knowledge Strength. He has a wealth of knowledge with native plants in the ACT and surrounding region. He offers a range of services to the community and facilitates bush food and medicine workshops, talks, and walks on Ngunnawal country. His talks include, plant identification, traditional Aboriginal Plant use and hands on experience, tasting, touching, and smelling samples.

Video Workshop 2. Awa Benny’s Subbi Subbi Fish and Fried Scone

Uncle Benny will be wearing traditional Torres Strait Islander Calico while he cooks a family favourite recipe. He will discuss traditional flavours used in cultural dishes and how they have since been adapted to fit in with modern living. For example, the recipe could well have been turtle but because of location, either chicken or fish can be used depending on what food source is readily available.

Talent: Uncle Benny Hodges is a Waanyi-Garawa/Bam Le-Kulgal Gal Descendant and is acknowledged as well respected Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander resident in the ACT.

He also acts as a Cultural Mentor for CWS Cultural Immersion Programs, Autism Australia and Lifeline Australia. He has over 30 years’ experience delivering and leading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community and Government programs. Uncle Benny is a former member of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elected Body. Uncle Benny has frequently cooked Torres Strait Islander dishes during NAIDOC week for the Canberra community.
