Australia Day 2019 – Planning your day

Food and drink

  • A variety of food and drink options will be available for purchase on Australia Day
  • The Australia Day celebrations are for all ages and only non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase onsite.
  • Patrons are discouraged from bringing and consuming alcohol at the event.
  • There will be a water stations on site to refill water bottles.

What should I bring?

What should I leave at home?

  • Pets - we recommend you leave your pets at home so they are not distressed by the fireworks. 
  • Glass bottles
  • Alcohol
  • Drones
  • Excessively large shade structures

  • Cigarettes - this is a smoke free zone

Where are the best vantage points for the fireworks?

  • Regatta Point foreshore is the best place to enjoy the kid’s activities from 4:00pm with the fireworks display over the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin at 9.00pm.
  • Patrick White Lawns (the lawns of the National Library of Australia) southern side of Lake Burley Griffin is also a great location to see the fireworks. There will be family activities also from 4pm.

Can I catch a bus?

Extra buses will operate after the fireworks, travelling from Commonwealth Avenue to the following interchanges (Gungahlin, Tuggeranong, Woden and Belconnen) will be directed left only onto Kings Edward Terrace.

Where can I park?

  • Civic Pool car park, Allara Street in Civic. Take the footbridge near the Civic Pool over Parkes Way to Commonwealth Park.
  • Parliamentary Triangle car parks.
  • Anzac Parade East and West car parks. 
  • Please note the Regatta Point car park will be closed from 2pm onwards.
  • Please pay attention to NO Parking Zones, Events ACT will not be responsible for any parking offences incurred.

Will there be road closures?

Yes. In the interest of public safety, some road and car park closures will occur on Saturday 26 January 2018.

  • Barrine Drive (including car park) closed from Albert Street East to West from 5:30am.
  • Commonwealth Bridge eastern walkway closed from 5:30am until 11:00pm. 
  • Commonwealth Bridge eastern lane southbound will be closed from 5:30am until 11:00pm. 
  • Albert Street East (Commonwealth Park) will be authorised permit holder only from 11:00am.
  • Regatta Point (Commonwealth Park) car park access will be by authorised permit only after 2pm. Those visiting Regatta Point/Commonwealth Park will be able to access car park until 2pm.
  • Commonwealth Bridge will be closed from approximately 9:00 - 9:15pm due to the fireworks display.  

What are the areas affected by the fireworks exclusion zones?

  • Exclusion zones will take effect before, during and after the event to ensure public safety
  • The areas affected by the fireworks exclusion zones will be the Commonwealth Avenue Bridge walkway and southbound lane. 

What are the areas affected by the cannons exclusion zone?

  • The exclusion zones will take effect before and during the event to ensure public safety
  • The area affected by the cannons exclusion zone will be pedestrian walkway directly in front of the National Capital Exhibition from 8.00am until 11.00am

Is there accessibility parking available?

Limited accessibility parking is available at Regatta Point car park and West Basin car park. Please speak to traffic marshals on arrival.

The car parks located near Patrick White Lawns are open as normal with accessibility car parks marked.

Where are the taxi and Uber drop off and collection points?

Regatta Point - The best area for drop off and collection points is the parking area at West Basin. There are a number of road closures in place and due to safety and security reasons no vehicles are permitted into the car park after 2pm prior to the concert commencing.

Patrick White Lawns – we will encourage you to walk to West Basin to travel by taxi or Uber. The roads near Patrick White Lawns are not closed, but will have increased traffic.

Please note: at the conclusion of the event all traffic leaving Parkes Place West (near Questacon car park) will be directed left only onto Kings Edward Terrace.

Where can I put my pram or stroller?

Prams and strollers are permitted at the event. There is no designated ‘stroller parking’ so you will need to keep it with you. We just ask that you be mindful of others around you when the concert is on.
