Planning your Night

What time should I get there?

Celebrations in the city will begin at 6pm and conclude at 12:45am.

There will be two fireworks shows - 9pm and midnight. The best vantage point for the fireworks is in Civic Square.

Where is the event being held?

New Year’s Eve in the City will be held in Civic Square, from 6pm to midnight.

How do I get there?

You can drive into the city and park in one of the car parks mentioned below, or you can catch a bus. For further information on what bus schedule will be running on New Year’s Eve, visit the Transport Canberra website at www.transport.act.gov.au or call 13 17 10.

How do I get home?

Transport Canberra will be running its New Year's Eve timetable, including the Late Night Rapid Services that will be operating until 2am. For more information visit www.transport.act.gov.au.

Where should I park?

There are many car parks around the Civic area that you may be able to utilise on the night. When planning to park for New Year’s Eve in the City, keep in mind these spaces:

What should I bring?

Large crowds are expected in the city. It is recommended that you bring water bottles and sun protection for the early part of the evening. You may wish to bring along your chairs, although the area becomes crowded quickly so we recommend coming early to find a prime spot. Picnics are welcome, however, please be aware that this is an alcohol-free and glass-free event. There will be catering outlets on site too, so bring along money for a delicious dish.

Is there anything I can't bring?

To allow everyone in the Canberra community to have a fun and safe night we ask that you do not bring the following things to NYE in the City.

  • Pets - there are large crowds and noisy fireworks which may distress animals.
  • Drones
  • Alcohol or glass - this is an alcohol and glass free event.
  • Weapons

Will there be road closures?

Yes. Please be mindful that for safety purposes, road closures will be in effect for this event. Between 5pm and approximately 2am, London Circuit, between Akuna Street and Northbourne Avenue will be closed, including Ainslie Avenue (Place). The car park on the corner of London Circuit and Constitution Avenue will be closed from 2pm as it falls within the fireworks exclusion zone, and the car park on the corner of London Circuit and Northbourne Avenue at East Row will be closed from 2pm until 2am.

Multiple intersections and traffic lights will be affected along Northbourne Ave (southbound) and Constitution Ave (northbound) during the 9pm and midnight fireworks displays. Road closures are in place 20 minutes before and after each fireworks display.

What facilities are available?

At the event, there will be a delicious selection of food and non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase.

There will also be toilets onsite including accessible facilities. There are a number of existing ATMs available.  Please note that this is an alcohol and glass free event.
