Arboretum After Hours

Kick back after work this Friday night at the Arboretum and chill out to the tunes of awesome local musos from the Black Hat Band. Enjoy great food and drinks while soaking up the best views in Canberra. See in the weekend with extended opening hours, a cool drink and a free guided walking tour.

Happening Friday 20 January 4pm to 7pm at the National Arboretum.

Canberra Women’s March

The Women’s March Canberra is a demonstration of love and power in solidarity with the Women’s March on Washington, which is rallying to demand respect and protection for women nationally and internationally. Canberrans will be marching for HERS - Health, Economic security, Representation and Safety.

There will be speakers before the march through Civic, and they’re expecting to finish by 12pm. People of all genders will be welcomed to the march.

Happening Saturday 21 January speeches will start at 11am in Garema Place.

Paws for Art: A doggy day out!

Join the National Gallery of Australia and the National Portrait Gallery for a PAWSome day! Draw to live music and paint your pet portraits with artist Darren McDonald. Enjoy a range of creative activities in the family space, pose in the outdoor photo booth and get treats from Paws For Art partners, Best Friends.

Paws for Art is being held in conjunction with The Popular Pet Show exhibition, on display at the National Portrait Gallery until March 2017.

Held on Saturday 21 January 11am to 3pm at the National Portrait Gallery.

Late Night Openings: Creatures of the Night

The National Portrait Gallery will keep its doors open until 8pm on selected Fridays during January and February. This Friday enjoy swinging jazz with a hint of vintage glamour. Alice Cottee’s dapper band, Dollface, will be accompanied by Miss Kitka’s models dressed as creatures we might bump into in the night.

Held on Friday 20 January 5pm to 8pm at the National Portrait Gallery.

David Attenborough’s Virtual Reality Experiences

After a sell out season in London this virtual reality experience is lighting up the National Museum of Australia. Immerse yourself into the first two natural history documentaries ever designed for Virtual Reality! Join David Attenborough as he travels back through time to see the first glimmerings of life on earth, or dive into a breathtaking underwater tour of the Great Barrier Reef. This feast for the senses is both whimsical and astounding.

Held at the National Museum of Australia daily at 2:30pm.

Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema Canberra

Enjoy a movie under the stars. Soak in the warmth of summer as you watch everything from the classics to new releases. Framed by the stunning landscape of the Patrick White Lawns there’s music during the day and movies at night. Cinemagoers can chill out before their movie with some tasty food and frosty beverages, while relaxing to the sounds of the best local musicians. To top it off, every Sunday screening has a dedicated live music event with free Ben & Jerry’s for all.

The open air cinema is held from Thursday 12 January to Sunday 19 February 2017. 

Something to plan ahead for...

Australia Day

There's something for everyone to enjoy and participate in this Australia Day, including an Aussie Day BBQ breakfast, kids entertainment, the National Flag Raising and Citizenship Ceremony held at Rond Terrace and an evening concert with a firework finale.

Have you heard whose headlining the concert? British India! The Choir of Hard Knocks, Yound Monks and Hands Like Houses will also take to the stage to provide the perfect sound track to your Australia Day celebrations.

Top off your celebrations by the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, and enjoy an amazing pyrotechnic display, as the Australia Day Fireworks light up Canberra skies. The best vantage points include Regatta Point, the lawns of the National Library and Rond Terrace.

Held on Thursday 26 January from 7:30am to 9:15pm.

Canberra Triathlon Festival

Get ready to race in the nation’s capital at the Canberra Triathlon Festival, which promises to be a spectacular day of heated competition. Whether you’re tackling a triathlon for the first time or in it to gain points as part of the 2016/2017 tri-series this festival is for you. There are four categories for you to compete in – the Standard, Sprint, Enforcer and Enticer.  Good luck!
